LWW v Morrisons 4/2/2013 : Morrisons won by 12 runs

The two newest members of the league met in something of a slow burner that went in to the last over very much in the balance. Morrisons were just 1 run ahead with 6 balls remaining and the batsmen, Faz and Ehsan, secured the points sensibly.

The whole game was notable for showing how quickly both sides have learned to adjust to the demands of the format. Morrisons bowling attack was not devoid of spin but it was dominated by quicks who all bowled just back of a length and were consistently hard to get away. Yet LWW were not frustrated by a lack of balls to drive. Instead, they worked the gaps with soft hands and accumulated steadily with the penultimate over of the innings being exceptional in going for 17. All three pairs hit gross totals in the 30s and the team lost just 4 wickets overall to finish on a competitive 80. It could easily have been 5 less but Morrisons were denied a run out when a shy hit the bowlers’ stumps with the batsman out of his ground but the bails stayed on.

80 didn’t look very competitive when Morrisons’ openers Asad and Kashif walked off having scored 50-0. They were the most attacking of all the game’s six pairs and also the most successful but LWW’s cause wasn’t helped by a couple of drops in the deep including one which was palmed for 6. Yet they stuck to their task and found a route back into contention. Morrisons middle pair Jaida and Gaz lost 3 wickets in their final over, after which their team’s net total was just 65 and an exciting final four overs beckoned.

The two sides continued to trade blows and Morrisons were just ahead on points going into the final round. In the end it seemed the value of careful shot selection that had been the hallmark of LWW’s inns was not lost on Faz and Ehsan. As the game reached the business end they got their team’s account in credit and made sure it stayed there.
