Featured Match : Morrisons v Ova Throws

Morrisons v Ova Throws    11/2/2013

Morrisons won by 2 runs

This was not just the game of the night but of the league so far. Morrisons needed 6 to win off the last over. The bowler, Rob, was cool under pressure, giving nothing away easily while his  team were  eager and focused in the field, right to the last. The batsmen, Tim and Faz, were not about to panic either and stuck to the sensible approach that had got them close to victory after an earlier wobble. A dot, a single, a two, a dot and a two meant the scores were level with one ball to go. Ova Throws brought the field up to press but Faz got enough of the ball to get it past them for 2 and  he and his partner celebrated.
Both teams will think they should have scored more. Ova Throws were 57 after two pairs but lost wickets in their final overs.  Morrisons regularly bowled short of a length but were not accurate enough to be really threatening.  When they bowled fuller they seemed to be naturally straighter and at one point  Faz was on a hat-trick after successive clean bowleds. Ova Throws weren’t always rewarded for their bigger shots, their total of 60 was competitive but less than they would have hoped for.
When Ova Throws bowled their length was generally fuller than Morrisons’  although Stew was a bit too full for Jay who was felled by a full toss just below waist high. Morrisons were a little lucky that not all their more cavalier shots went to hand but they still contrived to put themselves behind the rate after two pairs. Matt claimed overall figures of 5-30, Morrisons had been 22 after 4 overs but were just 33 after 8 and the game was up for grabs.
Tim and Faz, were not phased by the situation and, perhaps having seen where their team mates had erred, employed more judicious shot selection. Their being circumspect meant they averted disaster but nor did they take the game by the scruff of the neck. Instead, they kept it bubbling right to the last. It proved the right course of action in the end and leaves their side well placed with two wins from two. Ova Throws will have to content themselves with knowing  they contributed fully to  a thoroughly enjoyable game of cricket.
